However, just like other forms of art, music possesses a magical power that transcends language, differences, and barriers, bringing people together and one of the newest groups on the K-pop scene, Big Ocean, is a perfect example of this power.<\/p><p>Big Ocean stands out as the first K-pop group with members who have some hearing challenges. With their debut single &#8220;Glow&#8221; on April 20, 2024, the talented members Park HyunJin, Kim JiSeok, and Lee Chanyeon demonstrated that music is not just a series of sounds, but something that can be enjoyed by everyone.<\/p><p>Big Ocean achieves this by utilizing special tools and techniques in their music production and highlights the inclusivity of music by incorporating sign language into every aspect of their performances, from music videos to live stages. This use of sign language ensures that their art can be experienced and enjoyed by everyone, regardless of hearing ability or any challenges.<\/p><p>One of the members, Hyunjin, explains the universality of music and its ability to overcome barriers, saying: \u201cMusic is more than just sound\u2014it\u2019s about emotion, energy, and connection. Even if you can\u2019t hear the music in a traditional sense, you can still feel its impact. Art in any form can break barriers, and music has the power to unite people, creating a shared experience whether through sound, rhythm, or movement. You debuted with the remake of H.O.T&#8217;s song Hope titled &#8220;Glow.&#8221; From your previous statements, we know that this song represents hope and togetherness for you. This time, I\u2019d like to ask, what does music mean to you?<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Hyunjin:<\/strong> Music is my way of expressing emotions that are sometimes hard to put into words. It\u2019s also a form of escape, healing, and communication for me. Using sign language in our performances has allowed us to bridge the gap between those who hear and those who don\u2019t, creating a deeper connection with our Pados.<\/p><p><strong>Jiseok<\/strong>: Music is about storytelling for me. Through music, we\u2019re able to share our personal stories, struggles, and victories with the world. It&#8217;s a gift that allows us to connect deeply with our listeners.<\/p><p><strong>Chanyeon<\/strong>: Music also has the power to reach people in unexpected ways. Winning <strong>Hallyu Special Award<\/strong> at the <strong>2024 Kpop Newsis Awards<\/strong> showed us that our message of hope and unity is resonating, which is a huge honor for us and motivates us to keep sharing this message with even more people.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>2. Could you share with us the process of creating your songs? Do you take part in writing the lyrics? How do you decide on the themes?<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Hyunjin<\/strong>: Yes, we are very much involved in the creative process. We work closely with our production team, sharing our thoughts and emotions to make sure the songs feel authentic to us. The themes of our songs usually come from personal experiences and what we want to communicate to our Pados\u2014whether it\u2019s hope, perseverance, or love.<\/p><p><strong>Chanyeon<\/strong>: Sometimes, the theme is inspired by something one of us is going through, or we might want to send a message we feel our Pados need to hear. From there, we brainstorm and build on that idea until we have something that resonates with all of us.<\/p><p><strong>Jiseok<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> When we were working on <strong>&#8216;Slow,&#8217;<\/strong> we really wanted to capture the feeling of patience and perseverance. It\u2019s about taking your time and trusting your own process, even when things seem slow.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>3. You use sign language to ensure everyone can fully enjoy your music. Are there any other methods or techniques you employ to make your music more global and accessible?<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Hyunjin<\/strong>: We also use subtitles in our music videos and English captions on our social media content to make sure the message reaches everyone. How does it feel to raise awareness about such an important issue?<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Jiseok:<\/strong> It\u2019s truly an incredible feeling. Working with <strong>Felix,<\/strong> who embraced learning and using sign language with such enthusiasm, was both heartwarming and humbling. Seeing someone of his influence take the time to understand and support our message made me realize how powerful music and collaboration can be in raising awareness.<\/p><p><strong>Hyunjin<\/strong>: The fact that people are learning more about sign language through our collaborations is something we\u2019re extremely proud of. It\u2019s a reminder that music can be a powerful tool for change. It\u2019s not just about making great music\u2014it\u2019s about creating meaningful conversations around accessibility and inclusion.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>5. Glow, Blow, and now Slow. Is there a reason why the titles of your songs are so similar?<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Chanyeon:<\/strong> The titles reflect a progression of energy and emotion. &#8220;Glow&#8221; was about hope and the light we bring to each other. &#8220;Blow&#8221; was a powerful burst of energy and resilience, and &#8220;Slow&#8221; is about patience and trusting the process, no matter how long it takes. We wanted the titles to rhyme and give a sense of continuity, showing that the songs are bonded together under one theme.<\/p><p><strong>Hyunjin<\/strong>: Each title captures a different phase of our journey as a group and as individuals. Each artist brings their own unique energy and dedication, which inspires us to grow and learn as performers. While I haven\u2019t had the chance to work with <strong>Shotaro<\/strong> from <strong>RIIZE <\/strong>yet, I look forward to the day we can create something special together.<\/p><p><strong>Hyunjin:<\/strong> All of our collaborations have left lasting memories. Whether it&#8217;s the energy on set, the shared passion for music, or the new perspectives we gain from working with different artists, each experience has been rewarding. I look forward to creating more unforgettable moments with other artists, especially someone like <strong>TXT\u2019s Yeonjun<\/strong>, whom I admire greatly for his unique stage presence and energy. People sometimes fall into the misconception that music has no place in the lives of those with hearing challenges. However, what you do proves that music transcends barriers. It\u2019s something I carry with me as an artist, ensuring that our music reaches as many people as possible.<\/p><p><strong>Hyunjin:<\/strong> My time as a YouTuber taught me how to connect with people on a personal level. It made me more conscious of how we communicate with our Pados, especially those who are deaf or hard of hearing.<\/p><p><strong>Jiseok:<\/strong> My experience as an Alpine skier taught me the value of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork.
