White Entertainment x Big Ocean Interview
At first glance, music might seem like it’s limited to sounds and rhythms. However, just like other forms of art, music possesses a magical power that transcends language, differences, and barriers, bringing people together and one of the newest groups on the K-pop scene, Big Ocean, is a perfect example of this power.
Big Ocean stands out as the first K-pop group with members who have some hearing challenges. With their debut single “Glow” on April 20, 2024, the talented members Park HyunJin, Kim JiSeok, and Lee Chanyeon demonstrated that music is not just a series of sounds, but something that can be enjoyed by everyone.
Big Ocean achieves this by utilizing special tools and techniques in their music production and highlights the inclusivity of music by incorporating sign language into every aspect of their performances, from music videos to live stages. This use of sign language ensures that their art can be experienced and enjoyed by everyone, regardless of hearing ability or any challenges.
One of the members, Hyunjin, explains the universality of music and its ability to overcome barriers, saying: “Music is more than just sound—it’s about emotion, energy, and connection. Even if you can’t hear the music in a traditional sense, you can still feel its impact. Art in any form can break barriers, and music has the power to unite people, creating a shared experience whether through sound, rhythm, or movement. We want to show that music is for everyone, regardless of ability.”
Despite debuting less than six months ago, Big Ocean has already released three songs, collaborated with major artists, participated in numerous interviews, received an award, and achieved a spot on the Billboard charts.
Recently, they won the Hallyu Special Award at the 2024 K-pop Newsisi Awards and were named “K-pop Rookie of the Month” for September 2024 by Billboard, further solidifying their rising star status.
The group not only captivates fans with their music but also wins hearts with entertaining content featuring popular K-pop stars like Stray Kids’ Felix and Riize.
In their latest song “Slow,” Big Ocean collaborated with Young K from the iconic K-pop band Day6, catching the attention of music lovers worldwide.
We had the pleasure of conducting an insightful interview with Big Ocean’s members JiSeok, HyunJin, and Chanyeon, where we discussed their last comeback, journey, dreams, collaborations, and future plans for their Turkish and global fans.

Hello Big Ocean!
Thank you so much for accepting our interview request. We admire how you use music as a magical medium that transcends disabilities and touches the hearts of countless fans globally. It is an honor for us to host you. If you’re ready, let’s begin by talking about your music and your story!
1. You debuted with the remake of H.O.T’s song Hope titled “Glow.” From your previous statements, we know that this song represents hope and togetherness for you. This time, I’d like to ask, what does music mean to you?
Hyunjin: Music is my way of expressing emotions that are sometimes hard to put into words. It’s also a form of escape, healing, and communication for me. Using sign language in our performances has allowed us to bridge the gap between those who hear and those who don’t, creating a deeper connection with our Pados.
Jiseok: Music is about storytelling for me. Through music, we’re able to share our personal stories, struggles, and victories with the world. It’s a gift that allows us to connect deeply with our listeners.
Chanyeon: Music also has the power to reach people in unexpected ways. Winning Hallyu Special Award at the 2024 Kpop Newsis Awards showed us that our message of hope and unity is resonating, which is a huge honor for us and motivates us to keep sharing this message with even more people.
2. Could you share with us the process of creating your songs? Do you take part in writing the lyrics? How do you decide on the themes?
Hyunjin: Yes, we are very much involved in the creative process. We work closely with our production team, sharing our thoughts and emotions to make sure the songs feel authentic to us. The themes of our songs usually come from personal experiences and what we want to communicate to our Pados—whether it’s hope, perseverance, or love.
Chanyeon: Sometimes, the theme is inspired by something one of us is going through, or we might want to send a message we feel our Pados need to hear. From there, we brainstorm and build on that idea until we have something that resonates with all of us.
Jiseok: When we were working on ‘Slow,’ we really wanted to capture the feeling of patience and perseverance. It’s about taking your time and trusting your own process, even when things seem slow.
3. You use sign language to ensure everyone can fully enjoy your music. Are there any other methods or techniques you employ to make your music more global and accessible?
Hyunjin: We also use subtitles in our music videos and English captions on our social media content to make sure the message reaches everyone. Our goal is to create an inclusive space where everyone feels connected, no matter where they come from.
4. Recently, you collaborated with Felix of Stray Kids to promote your song “BLOW.” The video was so much fun, and I noticed Felix communicating using sign language. It’s incredible how your songs and collaborations have raised awareness about hearing challenges and sign language. You must be so proud. How does it feel to raise awareness about such an important issue?
Jiseok: It’s truly an incredible feeling. Working with Felix, who embraced learning and using sign language with such enthusiasm, was both heartwarming and humbling. Seeing someone of his influence take the time to understand and support our message made me realize how powerful music and collaboration can be in raising awareness.
Hyunjin: The fact that people are learning more about sign language through our collaborations is something we’re extremely proud of. It’s a reminder that music can be a powerful tool for change. It’s not just about making great music—it’s about creating meaningful conversations around accessibility and inclusion.
5. Glow, Blow, and now Slow. Is there a reason why the titles of your songs are so similar?
Chanyeon: The titles reflect a progression of energy and emotion. “Glow” was about hope and the light we bring to each other. “Blow” was a powerful burst of energy and resilience, and “Slow” is about patience and trusting the process, no matter how long it takes. We wanted the titles to rhyme and give a sense of continuity, showing that the songs are bonded together under one theme.
Hyunjin: Each title captures a different phase of our journey as a group and as individuals. We wanted to show that no matter the pace, we’re always moving forward.
6. You’ve released three songs in a short period. What are the unique aspects of these songs? Do you have a favorite among them?
Jiseok: Each song has its own personality. “Glow” is filled with warmth and hope, “Blow” is energetic and bold, and “Slow” is reflective and calm. “Slow” has a special place in my heart because it represents our journey and the support we’ve received, like being nominated today, September 17, for Billboard’s Rookie of the Month. It shows that no matter how long it takes, hard work and staying true to your message can lead to incredible things.
Hyunjin: I agree. “Slow” feels personal because it reflects the patience we’ve had to practice as a group. It’s a reminder that good things take time. We were honored to host a live viewing event for the Paralympics on JJAANN (global Star-fan community platform), where our message of perseverance resonated with so many people.
7. Since your debut, you’ve been collaborating with many K-pop idols. Who are some of the artists you’ve recently met or plan to collaborate with? Do you have any unforgettable memories from these collaborations?
Chanyeon: Every collaboration we’ve had so far has been meaningful and unforgettable in its own way. Each artist brings their own unique energy and dedication, which inspires us to grow and learn as performers. While I haven’t had the chance to work with Shotaro from RIIZE yet, I look forward to the day we can create something special together.
Hyunjin: All of our collaborations have left lasting memories. Whether it’s the energy on set, the shared passion for music, or the new perspectives we gain from working with different artists, each experience has been rewarding. I look forward to creating more unforgettable moments with other artists, especially someone like TXT’s Yeonjun, whom I admire greatly for his unique stage presence and energy. He’s a performer who truly brings something fresh and inspiring to every stage.
Jiseok: Collaborating with Felix was unforgettable. During our practice sessions, his genuine enthusiasm for learning sign language and his positive attitude made the whole process not just productive, but incredibly fun. His energy lifted everyone’s spirits, and that’s something I’ll always remember. BTS’s RM has always been someone I admire deeply and would want to collaborate with.
8. People sometimes fall into the misconception that music has no place in the lives of those with hearing challenges. However, what you do proves that music transcends barriers. What would you like to say about this aspect of art and music?
Hyunjin: Music is more than just sound—it’s about emotion, energy, and connection. Even if you can’t hear the music in a traditional sense, you can still feel its impact. Art in any form can break barriers, and music has the power to unite people, creating a shared experience whether through sound, rhythm, or movement. We want to show that music is for everyone, regardless of ability.
9. I know that before becoming idols and entering the music industry, you had different jobs. How do you think your previous experiences help you now?
Chanyeon: My background as an audiologist helped me understand the importance of representation and accessibility. It’s something I carry with me as an artist, ensuring that our music reaches as many people as possible.
Hyunjin: My time as a YouTuber taught me how to connect with people on a personal level. It made me more conscious of how we communicate with our Pados, especially those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Jiseok: My experience as an Alpine skier taught me the value of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. These qualities have been essential in my journey as an artist, helping me to stay focused and give my all to every performance.
10. In a short time, you’ve gained a large fanbase not only in Korea but also around the world. Your music inspires many people. Do you have any plans to meet your global fans through concerts, tours, or other events in the near future?
Jiseok: Absolutely. We’re excited about the possibility of a global tour. Meeting our Pados in person would be a dream come true, and we’re working hard to make that happen soon.
11. Which countries would you like to perform at or visit?
Hyunjin: We would love to visit and perform in many places around the world. Meeting our Pados wherever they are and sharing our music with them is something we look forward to with great excitement. Every country has its own unique culture, and it’s an honor to connect with people through our music. We have a special admiration for Turkey and can’t wait for the opportunity to perform there and meet our amazing Turkish Pados.
12. Speaking of global fans and other countries, I’d like to ask: Recently, international desserts like Dubai chocolate have gained popularity. Have you ever tried Turkish desserts like baklava or kaymak? Is there a dessert you’d like to try?
Chanyeon: Just recently, I tried Dubai chocolate, and it was amazing! As for Turkish desserts, I’ve heard great things, but I haven’t had the chance to try them yet. Baklava is definitely on my list, and I’m excited to explore more of the unique flavors of Turkish sweets.
Hyunjin: I tried Dubai chocolate today, and it was delicious! I’m definitely open to trying more international desserts like Turkish baklava or kaymak in the future.
Jiseok: Kaymak is something I’m excited to try! I love exploring new flavors, and I’m looking forward to experiencing it when I get the chance.
13. K-pop has encouraged millions of fans worldwide, including in Turkey, to learn Korean. I believe that thanks to you, there will be a significant increase in interest in learning sign language as well. You know not only Korean but also international and American sign language. Do you have any study tips you’d like to share with your fans who are trying to learn sign language or a new language?
Hyunjin: Practice consistently and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Learning a new language, whether it’s sign language or a spoken language, takes time. Watching videos, practicing with friends, and immersing yourself in the language can help.
Jiseok: Patience is key. You might not get it right the first time, but with determination, you’ll improve. Learning with a community also helps—find a group or partner to practice with!
14. Nowadays, many young people are directed toward fields they don’t dream of due to various reasons. What would you like to say to your fans who want to follow their own dreams despite everything? What keeps you going or what makes you motivated when you encounter an obstacle?
Chanyeon: I’d tell them to trust their journey. It may not always be easy, but if your dream is something you’re truly passionate about, it’s worth pursuing.
Hyunjin: It’s important to stay true to yourself. Obstacles will always be there, but it’s how you overcome them that defines you. When I face challenges, I remind myself of why I started—thinking back to my early days as a YouTuber when I wanted to inspire people like me. The people who believe in me, especially our Pados, keep me going.
15. You’ve just made a comeback, but I still want to ask, are there any new projects you’re currently working on? What excites you the most among your future projects?
Jiseok: We’re always working on new music and collaborations, but we can’t reveal too much just yet. What excites me the most is how we’re growing as artists. We’ve been working on something special, and I can’t wait to share it with our Pados very soon.
16. Lastly, what would you like to say to your Turkish and global fans who follow you?
Big Ocean: To all of our Turkish and global Pados, your love and support mean the world to us. We are truly humbled and deeply grateful for the incredible milestones we’ve reached together, like winning the Hallyu Special Award at the 2024 Kpop Newsis Awards and being nominated today for Billboard’s Rookie of the Month. None of this would have been possible without your unwavering belief in us. We can’t wait for the day we can meet in person and share our music with you. Until then, please continue to support us, and always keep believing in yourself and pursuing your dreams. Thank you for being such an important part of our journey!
