Interview with the Korean Singer Song Wonsub who made a tremendous impact with his ‘’ Antidepresan’’ Cover!

Are you ready to get to know Korean singer Song Wonsub who is known for his cover performances, closely?

Musician Song Wonsub, who gained great popularity in our country with his cover of ‘Antidepresan’ by Mabel Matiz and Mert Demir, answered our questions for you!

1. Hello, Song Wonsub! Before we start the interview, could you tell us something about yourself for your fans worldwide and especially those in Türkiye?

  •  Hello, people of Türkiye! It’s nice to meet you . I am Song Wonsub.
  • I used to be a jazz trombonist a long time ago. Was it 6 years? 7 years ago, I started making and releasing my solo music, and by chance, I made fans from Russia and Ukraine on my YouTube channel.

2. Many people recognized you when you started to sing Turkish songs. What’s the story behind how you started singing in Turkish?

I’ve started to translate and sing Kazakh and Uzbek songs into Korean in a regular basis. During this process, I realized that Türkiye is also neighbouring country. I found a few pieces, listened to them. I picked a song I liked , translated it and sang it in Korean!

3. I know you also sing in other languages, besides Turkish. One of them is Kazakh. What’s the reason behind your interest in different languages? Do you have any experience in these countries?

I first started out of curiosity. I believe music only differs in language . I think it is a powerful tool that has an emotional impact on people. Therefore, I assumed that if I naturally translate songs into Korean, people who love Korean culture would also be pleased with this. Most of my cover songs are from CIS countries.

4. It is common to see K-Pop fans singing Korean songs in Türkiye. However, you can’t see a Korean artist singing in Turkish everyday. What is your opinion on this? Why do you think music transcends language and culture? ( What do you think about people from different languages and cultures liking the same song?)

  • Most of my cover songs are from CIS countries.
  • With the development of smart phones and internet, it is very natural to be easily exposed to another country’s culture. Even though each country’s music style is slightly different  from each other, I think music influences people in a good way. So, I don’t think language matters much.

5. Which Turkish song do you like the most?

I think the first song I sang, ‘’Mert Demir & Mabel Matiz – Antidepresan’’, it was very original and fresh for me. This song had an addictive part to it and while I was singing, I sang it so naturally like I was recording my own song.

6. Many of your videos went viral in Türkiye.  What was the most impactful reaction you’ve got?

I’ve received positives comments like ‘’ Come to Türkiye and give a concert! Many people will come!’’ And I’m very grateful for that. If there’s an opportunity, I would love to perform in Türkiye one day.

7 . Which countries/cities have you performed concerts in so far? Where was your most unforgettable concert?

  • I’ve perfomed in places like Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan , Uzbekistan, Moldova, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus.
  • Hmm. Hehehe. Big concerts, small concerts, all concerts are precious to me. That’s why all of them left deep impressions in my memory.

8. What do you most want to achieve in your career?

There is nothing in particular. If I can make a living by making music for a long time, it would be enough for me.

9. Lastly, what would you like to say to your fans who love you and to the ones who will get to know you?

Hmm. I will continue to make good music and videos in the future. I hope to meet you in Türkiye one day. Thank you for your support.
