SYNOPSIS
Don’t make a noise otherwise the bomb will go off
Former lieutenant commander Do-yeong (KIM Rae-won) suffers from PTSD caused by the hellish submarine accident in which he lost his colleagues. Even though he is revered as a national hero, he feels guilty and tormented by his own family estrangement.
One day, Do-yeong receives a cryptic phone call from a mysterious person, threatening he’ll blow up a football stadium with improvised explosives triggered by a certain decibel. In the nick of time, Do-yeong saves innocent lives but the terrorist remains intent on inflicting further casualties, including Do-yeong’s wife and daughter. Now he must race against the clock to track the terrorist down and save his family as well as other people. Amid this impossible task, the unforeseen consequences of a secret he left buried in the deep sea resurfaces.

‘DECIBEL,’ one of the most anticipated movies in 2022 for its unique subject and genre, just started its journey to meet the audiences. The movie, which has just been released in its original territory South Korea on Nov 16th, is the ‘Sound Terror Action’ movie, portraying a bomb designer (LEE Jong-suk) who attempts to occupy a city with a special bomb responsive to a certain degree of the big noise, and a former navy commander (KIM Rae-won) who became his target.
The most interesting feature of this movie which attracts the audiences the most is its unique subject of the ‘Sound-responsive Bomb.’ The sound-responsive bomb is a specially designed bomb which senses noise. When it reaches to a certain degree of noise, the remaining time to the explosion will drop by half. When it passes its limit of noise, the bomb explodes. This unique setting captures the audiences, as it’s quite different from the ordinary time bombs shown in other movies so far. And it is also interesting that these bombs are being planted in the middle of the city where no one can control the noise. The director HWANG In-ho says, “While I was reading a script about bomb, I just came up with a different idea. I recalled my childhood memories of the swimming pool where I used to go sometimes, and the sound of whistle there. When I heard the whistling, I used to run into the swimming pool. That was when the idea about the sound-responsive bomb, which reacts to a loud noise like whistling, just flashed through my mind. I imagined the bomb being planted to a stadium or a playground where noise cannot be controlled,” indicating where this new concept of ‘Sound Terror Action’ has been started. This uncontrollable ‘Noise’ becomes the trigger of the bomb, boosting its strength in genre as the background of the movie is getting expanded to the entire city. The places, filled with random noise and therefore exquisitely selected according to the director’s intention, are being suspected as the target of terrorism, building up high tension with urgent situation. The director HWANG In-ho tells us about this interesting feature of the movie. “If it happens in the place where the noise is being generated continuously and randomly by a massive crowd, our protagonist cannot control the situation and will get into more and more troubles, so it will raise more tensions to the movie.” When everywhere in the noisy city becomes the target of sound-responsive bomb attack in one second, every sound and noise become a potential trigger of the bomb, and those moments double the fun of Sound Terror Action genre. The lead actor KIM Rae-won, who has starred in many movies in various genre including action and crime movies, expressed his feeling when he read the script for the first time, saying “I didn’t even notice how many hours had passed, because it was so speedy and fun,” showing his satisfaction and immersion to the story while reading the script. He plays the role of ‘the former Navy Commander who became the target of terrorism,’ who receives a mysterious phone call from the bomb designer and gets involved in terrorism. He gets a warning of terrorism without knowing the reason or where the target place is, and his choice and action determine whether the bomb explodes or not. Under the strict surveillance of the terrorist (the bomb designer), he cannot notify the situation to anyone. His solitary struggle to prevent the terrorist bomb attack across the city will make the audiences feel the extreme tension and thrill. LEE Jong-suk plays the role of ‘the bomb designer who once was a Navy Lieutenant & Mensa member,’ who tightens the confrontation between the two characters and raises the tension of the story to a higher level. He makes dangerous situations with the sound-responsive bomb in all around the city and gives inevitable missions to the main character. As our protagonist wants to stop the bombing, he has no choice but to follow the orders of the bomber. No one knows his intention or the reason of terrorism, but he continues to warn another bomb attack and drag the audiences into unpredictable story.

First, KIM Rae-won, who has been established as an incomparable actor through his filmography such as <Crazy Romance>, <Long Live the King>, <Resurrected Victims>, <The Prison>, and <Gangnam Blues>, plays the role of ‘the former Navy Commander who became the target of terrorism.’ He elaborately builds up the different layers of the character from a calm and cool-headed appearance to more humane aspect, driving the audiences into a deeper level of immersion. Moreover, he performed most of the action scenes by himself without using stunt man, which makes the movie more realistic. JUNG Sang-hoon, an all-round entertainer who appears in play, musical, and entertainment shows, as well as movies and TV series, makes his appearance in the movie as ’a journalist who happens to get involved in the terror incident,’ making the story richer while helping the protagonist and following the lead. PARK Byung-eun, who has the great acting skills across various genres, plays ‘an agent from Defense Security Command,’ giving a different point of view and speeding up the progress of the story. CHA Eun-woo, the rising star, plays the role of ‘Petty Officer 1st class, Sonic Wave Detector of Navy submarine.’ He shows a detailed acting by taking advice from real officers and professionals to understand better of his character. In DECIBEL, which depicts a terrorist attack using ‘Sound-responsive bomb’ in the middle of the big city, another important feature to lead the tension of the action scenes, other than the great performances of actors, is the sound which captures the ears of audiences. The director HWANG and the staffs aimed to make it top priority to deliver a realistic sound from daily living noise to roaring sound of the big explosion of Sound-responsive bomb, to make the audiences immersed deeply in the movie. With the great effort of staffs and crews, the detailed sound effect brings the audiences into the center of the event, which is happening right now in the movie, with ‘the former Navy Commander who became the target of terrorism’ and ‘the Bomb Designer who once was a Navy Lieutenant & Mensa member.’
Ordinary daily noise, like the sound of water-boiling kettle, rice cooker, cutting board, and the window being opened, can be a life-threatening element with the setting that the bomb explodes when it passes its limit of noise. The movie describes this unusual situation in a realistic way and provides audiences with a better immersion to the story. The former Navy Commander who became the target of terrorism, a journalist who happens to get involved in the terror incident, and the officers of E.O.D (Explosive Ordnance Disposal)… They all try hard to reduce noise and to disarm the bomb, but sometimes their attempt makes a bigger noise, and even white noise which usually doesn’t do any harm suddenly changes into a dangerous element that raises tension the most.
While detailed sound is helping a better immersion to the story, the big sound of the explosion all around the city provides the cinematic spectacle. The staffs of DECIBEL made it a rule to shoot a real bombing without CG, to make the explosion scenes more realistic and tense. The director HWANG says, “There are a lot of explosion scenes, but we did the real explosions to capture the real event without the help of CG.” The staffs tried their best to capture both the reality of actual explosion with special effects and the real reaction of the actors. Thanks to the efforts of the staffs and actors, the explosion scenes in the movie which happen in the various places like stadium and waterpark make us experience a great spectacle and bring tension of the bombing perfectly. KIM Rae-won was astonished and said, “The special effect team and art team prepared the bombing impeccably, so actors could act easily like we’re in the real situation.”

To the Submarine Set that looks real, the Scale Explodes!
To describe more realistic Sound Terror Action, DECIBEL chose various large places as the shooting spot, bringing the story into reality with the visual of an overwhelming scale. In DECIBEL, the places, where many people come and go, and noise cannot be controlled, are chosen to the target of bombing, so the grand scale of bombing gives simultaneous tension to the movie.
First, the grand scale shooting after renting the whole Asiad Main Stadium captures our eyes. In the movie, a football club competition is held in the stadium, where the football clubs that represents each country fight to win the trophy. The scenes at the stadium were mostly shoot by drones and filled with the great scale that overwhelms the audiences. As Asiad Main Stadium is much bigger than other usual stadiums, the reflected sounds and echoes that were generated by the big stadium provides the audiences with vividness of real experience and higher tension of when bombing happens. And the shooting at a big waterpark and wave pool also adds diversity to the speedy progress of the story. This waterpark becomes another target place of the terrorism, as it’s full of various random noise. KIM Rae-won, who played the main role of the former Navy Commander who became the target of terrorism, mentioned this waterpark scene was the most difficult. “Underwater shooting was not easy, and it was memorable because I had to find the bomb under the water to disarm it.”
The submarine scenes are the highlight of DECIBEL, which are incomparable in terms of its great scale. The information of submarines is mostly a military secret, so the staffs put much effort to make the submarine set as realistic as possible, with various research of overseas information and the counsel of former submarine captain. To make the audiences can feel like they’re really in the submarine, Art director, lightening director and DOP had a discussion to capture the moment of suffocating feeling and even humidity in the submarine into camera. CHA Eun-woo who played the role of the sound detect Petty Officer of Navy submarine says, “It was a set, but I was surprised as it looked like a real submarine. I even looked around alone for 20 minutes when I first visited the submarine set,” telling how much realistic the submarine set was.

Passion of Actors for the Action Scenes!
As the director’s intension found in what he said, “To make the most of the setting of ‘Sound-responsive Bomb,’ we needed a place that multiple random noise can be occurred and the movements are complicated when our protagonist search for the bomb,” in DECIBEL, which starts with a phone call from the unknown and become filled with a series of terrorist bombings, the main characters show various actions in the various places like the football stadium, skyscraper, waterpark, elevator, and on the roads of the city, playing cat-and-mouse game with speedy progress of the story.
It was not only the director and the staffs who wanted to put more reality and immersion to this Sound Terror Action movie DECIBEL, where everything happens in 6 hours only. The Major actors including the lead actor KIM Rae-won performed most scenes without CG and stunts, receiving big applauses from 200% satisfied staffs. After being targeted by the terrorist, KIM Rae-won centers in the story as the former Navy Commander who struggles hard to stop the terrorist. KIM says “the former Navy Commander is a character who struggles alone for 6 hours to prevent the terrorist attack, after he takes a phone call from someone and then becomes the target of the terrorism. The backstory of the character is solidly built already, so I cared a lot to make the incidents happening become more real and vivid.” He also says, “I did most of action scenes myself without stunts, like car chasing scene that I drove myself, underwater scene to find the bomb, jumping-off scene from skyscraper, and fighting scenes,” showing his satisfaction to the difficult but realistic action scenes.
The director HWANG says about KIM, who refused CG and stunts and performed most of the dangerous action scenes himself for the realism and vividness of the unpredictable incidents, that “If it hadn’t been KIM, there would have been much more difficulties in shooting. We made safety top priority, and it was not easy for the staffs, too,” showing his gratitude for KIM.
LEE Jong-suk, who played the bomb designer who uses limited space in the elevator and performed action scenes himself without gear, JUNG Sang-hoon, a journalist following the incidents all time, and PARK Byung-Eun, an agent from Defense Security Command, also put their passion and effort in the action scenes, which audiences can find in theaters in November.

Now he has the biggest mission to follow the voice of the bomb designer to prevent the bombing. He runs all around the city to stop the bombing and save people’s lives, without sparing his own life. He happens to meet the former Navy Commander who became the target of terrorism, when he visited the football stadium with his son. Unlike his career goal of getting a scoop, he has a life principle that ‘Let’s live a common life, neither special nor high-standard.’ When he gets to know the situation that the terrorist planted the bombs in multiple places in the city, he hesitates to throw himself into this bombing incident. After a lot of thought, he decides to accompany the former Navy Commander to stop the terrorism, and becomes a helpful teammate, finding clues of the case.

JUNG Sang-hoon has been working in the various fields of Movie, TV Drama, Play, Musical, and Entertainment, with his great acting skills to play any characters in any genres. ‘An Agent from Defense Security Command’
He is an agent from Defense Security Command who follows the former Navy Commander like shadow. In the beginning, he thinks the first house bombing was a simple terror, but later he gets deeply involved in the terror incident, as he finds traces of the ex-commander from all the places where the bombs were planted, including the stadium and waterpark. Looking into the case with sharp and sensitive eyes, he tries to find the truth behind the incident, raising tension to the movie with another point of view.

Director / HWANG In-ho
Director HWANG In-ho, who made people laugh and cry with various movies in different genres like Thriller, Action, Romance, and Comedy, is coming back with a unique movie of ‘Sound Terror Action’ genre. His directorial debut was <Spellbound>(2011), which scored 3M admissions in Korean theaters, introducing a new style that Romantic Comedy and Horror were mixed. In the movie <Monster>(2014), he once again proved his ability in film directing with handling another unique setting of the story very well. In DECIBEL, he is raising audiences’ expectation of the movie with the unique setting of ‘the bomb which is responsive to the loud noise.’ HWANG says, “It’s about the ‘Sound-Responsive Bomb’ that the remaining time will drop by half when reaching to a certain degree of noise. This unique setting is quite different from the ordinary time bombs shown in other movies,” introducing the most distinctive feature of the movie.
He also proved his ability as a script writer and storyteller with the movies including <Two Faces Of My Girlfriend>, <Love Phobia>, and <Escaping From Charisma>. He talks about his new movie that “It’s an Action movie that characters are the most important, so it will be fun to follow the characters.” The movie will unfold the intense story of ‘Sound-responsive Bomb’ through the tight confrontation of the two main characters, the former Navy Commander who became the target of terrorism’ and ‘the Bomb Designer who once was a Navy Lieutenant & Mensa member,’ pushing the situation to the limit and raising tensions to the movie.
KIM Rae-won and LEE Jong-suk, who worked with the director HWANG for the first time in this movie, say that “I didn’t even notice how many hours had passed, because it was so speedy and fun,” “I could imagine a very sophisticated movie when we can film well the speedy progress of story,” showing their admiration and trust to the director and the film itself.
The most unique movie in 2022, which is exquisitely made by the script and directing ability of the director HWANG In-ho with unique subject and settings, is ready to conquer the theaters in November.
