An interview with Rolling Quartz, who have made a great breakthrough in K-Rock music!
We had a pleasant conversation with Rolling Quartz, who brought a new breath to K-Rock music by debuting with the song “Blaze” in December 2020, where we also talked about Türkiye and Turkish fans!
1. Hello, first of all, could you tell us about yourself?
Choi Hyun Jung: Hello. I’m Rolling Quartz’s guitarist Choi Hyun Jung.
Jaeyoung: I’m Rolling Quartz’s energetic vocal Jayoung!!!
Iree: Hello everyone! I’m Iree the red hair who plays guitar in Rolling Quartz.
A-Reum: Hello. Bass guitarist A-Reum.
Yeongeun: Hello. Rolling Quartz’s drummer Young Eun.
2. Congratulations on your single releasing on April 9th! How was the preparation process for your single?
Jae-young: Thank you! Although creating and completing a new song can be challenging, it is a very satisfying job. Even though the song making process is similar, we gain different experiences in each song. For “Stand Up”, we paid particular attention to vocal direction and shot a music video with a new concept and direction that we had not tried before, which gave us a good experience.
IREE: We proceeded in a fun way because it was a song that I really liked. The whole process was enjoyable, but I was especially impressed by watching the lion dance live while shooting the music video. That’s when I realized how amazing that performance was. I instantly fell in love with the lion mask and I still dream of playing with that lion every day.
3. You will have a solo concert on July 6, are you looking forward to it? What are the expectations of fans coming to the concert?
Hyeon-jeong: Yes, I feel very excited and nervous. I also plan to put on a great show for our fans who come and have fun with them, which excites me.
Jae-young: It’s always exciting to have a concert alone! I feel even more anticipated as we will be adding most of our new songs after releasing the mini album.
AIR: Compared to before, our own original songs have become more numerous and we have gained more experience on stage, so I think we can give greater entertainment and emotion to the audience, which excites me.
A-Reum: I guess the new songs of the new album will be the most anticipated thing. We will try to do our best by working hard and preparing.
Young-eun: Performing a solo concert in Korea after a long time is both nervous and exciting. I would love to communicate and meet Korean fans directly!
4. Who has been a trainee the longest among the members? What was the most difficult part of your time as an intern?
Choi Hyun Jung: Also, I didn’t work as a trainee, we were all living our own musical lives.
Jae-young: We barely had time to get through practice! When we came together as a group, we immediately started YouTube activities! There were vague fears that everyone had in Korea that we could get love as a group (we couldn’t even imagine being loved abroad) and do it well.
Ai-Ri: I think we don’t use the term “trainee time” within the group. I think the process of finding a group member is also part of group activities. Personally, Rolling Quartz is my debut in my musical life and I just practiced for 5 years to find the members to play with.
Young Eun: I really wanted to start a group, but it was very difficult to find like-minded members; So at a time when I thought I wouldn’t be able to start a group, I’m so happy and grateful to have found good, like-minded members now!
5. When did you start your music career?
Choi Hyun-Jeong: It’s hard to say exactly when I started, as I’ve been interested in many instruments and music since a young age.
Ja-Young: I loved music and the stage since I was little, but I started professionally at the age of 17.
IREE: I sang in the church choir from the age of 5 and was a singer in the church band in middle school. At that time, I was introduced to group instruments for the first time. I think it was while shooting the promotional video for the Swing guitar that I started my music career as Ai-Ri, maybe?
A-Reum: I started in the school band during my high school years.
Young-Eun: I first thought I wanted to do music in middle school, and I started playing drums seriously while attending arts high school.
6. If you were not interested in music, what profession would you choose?
Choi Hyun-Jeong: I could be an internet streamer and game streamer.
Ja-Young: I used to draw.
Ai-Ri: Since I was interested in many fields from a young age, my profession could change depending on what I was interested in at any time. That’s how music started. Most things interested me except paperwork. But I think I would still do a creative job. It’s always exciting to make my dreams come true.
A-Reum: I would be a writer because I love writing.
Young-Eun: When I was a student, I wanted to be a mathematics teacher because I loved mathematics, but now I want to be an animal caretaker because I love animals very much.
7. How do you relax when you are very stressed?
Ja-Young: Eating dessert, meeting friends.
IREE: When I’m slightly stressed I look at cute animals, when I’m very stressed I eat delicious food while drinking and kill enemies in FPS games.
A-Reum: I lie down and sleep for long periods of time without doing anything.
Young-Eun: I pay attention to my physical health while playing an instrument, so I take a half-bath at home or watch my favorite entertainment programs while getting a massage on the massage chair.
8. Have you ever visited Türkiye? If not, which city are you wondering about?
Choi Hyun-Jeong: Unfortunately, I still haven’t visited. I’m curious about Türkiye’s famous holiday resort Antalya and the ancient city Ephesus.
Ja-Young: I haven’t been to Türkiye , but I want to take a balloon tour in Cappadocia!
Ai-Ri: I want to go to Side and see the ancient ruins! I have some interest in ancient civilizations and cultures, so I want to experience as much as possible with my eyes, ears and nose.
A-Reum: I’ve never been to Türkiye, but I want to see Pamukkale! I want to see the beauties created by nature such as the ancient theater of Hierapolis, the ancient pool, travertines and Kaklık Cave.
Young-Eun: I want to take a balloon tour in Cappadocia!
10. You will be releasing an EP album in June, how was the album making process?
Choi Hyun-Jeong: It’s still in the preparation phase, but I think it will be fun. I want to show it to our fans as soon as possible.
Ja-Young: We took great care in each song. I can say that it is the album we worked on the most among the Rolling Quartz albums. It is an exciting feeling to have my own compositions released to the world, I think I will feel this feeling throughout my life!
IREE: We’re still working at the moment and it’s pretty busy. I don’t even know how April passed. I also feel the pressure that we have to deliver something better for our fans, who are paying more attention to us as time goes by.
Young-Eun: There are 4 songs in total in the album and each song has a different style, so it was fun and we worked hard.
10. What style do you want to try on your next return?
IREE: According to Ja-Young, she wants to show a style like “victory warrior”.
A-Reum: Uniform.
Young-Eun: I want to perform wearing a great mask.
11. What songs have you been listening to the most lately?
Choi Hyun-Jeong: Julian Lage’s Nocturne and Yang In-Mo’s Elegant Ghost.
Ja-Young: Kool Aid by Bring Me the Horizon, Sincerely by TRUE, Afterlife by Holding Absence.
IREE: Bulletproof Heart by My Chemical Romance.
A-Reum: Since we are currently working on the mini album, I have been listening to Rolling Quartz’s new songs the most lately.
Young-Eun: Until The Day I Die from Story Of The Year.
12. If you had the opportunity to collaborate with a K-Pop idol or group, who or which group would you like to collaborate with?
Choi Hyun-Jeong: The combination of IU / Rolling Quartz with the musical style that IU has shown so far can create new and interesting music.
Ja-Young: Everyone who wants to work with us is welcome +ㅡ+
A-Reum: Rolling Quartz is open to all artists. If there is an opportunity, I would like to work with other artists.
Young-Eun: All fans know that I have been a Dreamcatcher fan for a long time! I would be so excited if we worked together, but it would be really cool.
13. What would you like to say to Turkish fans?
Choi Hyun-Jeong: I want to meet fans of our sister country Türkiye as soon as possible! We will do our best to deliver better music and great performances. Thank you and I love you!
Jayoung: Hope we have the opportunity to meet you!! Please wait a little more..♡
IREE: Hello, Turkish Diadem! We feel that you love our music and support us in Turkey, a place we have never been to before, more than here in Korea! We truly thank you and we love you. Let’s definitely meet! I love you Türkiye!
A-REUM: We want to see the sweet Turkish Diadem, like the magnificent desserts of Türkiye!
