Our interview with former CLC member and leader Chang Seungyeon!
Known for her powerful stage presence and warm personality, former CLC leader Chang Seungyeon answered all the questions you’ve been curious about in our interview!
1. First things first, could you tell us a little about yourself?
Seungyeon: Hello! I’m Chang Seungyeon, currently active as a DJ and dancer, and formerly the leader of CLC!
2. Alright then, let’s dive in! How are you really doing these days? I mean it, how have you been feeling lately?
Seungyeon: Lately, I’ve been really into working out! My stamina has dropped a lot, so I’m working on building it back up. And I’m feeling really fresh these days ~ since the weather has gotten cooler.
3. And what have you been up to recently? I noticed you’ve been doing quite a lot of dance teaching at different events!
Seungyeon: I recently finished my Europe tour and my schedule in Singapore and now I’m taking some rest in Korea! As a DJ, I’m working hard, and as a dancer, I’m also making efforts to connect and share with students and dancers from many different countries!
4. How about we go back in time a little? Do you remember the very first audition you joined? What was that day like for you?
Seungyeon: l think my very first audition was when I was about 15 years old! Thanks to the recommendation of my dance academy teacher, I got the chance to audition for a Japanese company. At that time, I honestly didn’t have big ambitions, and I never thought I would actually make it, so instead of being nervous, I felt pretty relaxed during the audition! In the end, I passed, but since I couldn’t go to Japan, I had to give it up. After that, I worked hard to prepare for auditions with Korean companies!
5. When was the moment you decided, “Yes, I want to be an idol”?
Seungyeon: Actually, my dream wasn’t really to become an idol at first, what I really wanted was to be a solo artist like Lee Hyo Lee. But while preparing for auditions, I naturally started practicing idol songs and dances, and that made me more interested in it. After becoming a trainee, watching seniors like 4Minute and BEAST inspired me even more and helped me grow that dream!
6. Did you ever feel like giving up on your dreams? And what helped you to keep chasing after them?
Seungyeon: I never really wanted to give up! After debut, the competition got tougher, but I kept going with my members and fans. The hardest time was after leaving my company, my confidence dropped, and I doubted myself. But thanks to the support of fans, friends, and family, I focused on myself, kept practicing, and now I continue chasing my dreams as a DJ and dancer without giving up!
7. What kind of advice would you give to people who are passionate about music and dance?
Seungyeon: l think there are so many people out there who are talented, beautiful, cool, and naturally gifted. When I compared myself to them, I used to feel so small. But now, I try to focus more on my own strengths and uniqueness, always learning, practicing, and never stopping. If you make your own color strong, no one can deny it. So don’t just think about it, keep moving, never give up! I believe that the ones who stay consistent are the ones who last the longest.
8. Can we talk a bit about CLC? I have to confess I was probably your biggest fan! And you were my bias! Looking back now, what’s the most unforgettable CLC memory for you?
Seungyeon: Oh! Thank you. It’s a little embarrassing, but it makes me happy, haha. Every moment I spent with the CLC members was truly precious, and I have so many unforgettable memories! One that stands out is when we all ordered the food we wanted and ate together at the dorm, it made me so happy. And I also remember how we used to lay out mats and nap together in the waiting rooms at broadcasting stations haha.
9. If you could describe CLC in just one word, what would it be?
Seungyeon: Youth.
10. What about your future plans? Is there something specific you want to do?
Seungyeon: My future plan is to become even more active as a DJ and perform on many different stages, both big and small. One of my goals is to eventually release my own DJ album. And as a dancer, I want to hold workshops in countries I haven’t been to yet, so I can meet more fans and dancers around the world!
11. As I said earlier, we’ve seen you as a dance instructor lately. But will we also get to see singer Seungyeon again?
Seungyeon: If I get the opportunity, I’d love to do it anytime! There are definitely times when I miss the singer side of myself, too.
12. Do you have someone you look up to? Like, who’s your role model or idol?
Seungyeon: Lee Hyo Lee, Tinashe, Tate McRae, Doja Cat
13. Is there a song you’ve been hooked on recently? If yes, which one?
Seungyeon: Olivia Dean – Nice To Each Other
14. Do you have a little ritual you always do before going on stage? Some idols have really funny ones haha.
Seungyeon: First of all, I don’t eat much! And I always drink an iced Americano. I also spray on a lot of perfume haha, kind of like equipping an item before going on stage!
15.Have you ever been to Turkey before? What do you think about it?
Seungyeon: I’ve never been to Turkey before! It’s definitely one of the countries I really want to visit! I absolutely love kebab… And I’d love to see Turkey’s historic sites in person someday!
16. Have you had the chance to try any Turkish food? If yes, what’s your favorite?
Seungyeon: Kebab! I eat it quite often, both in Korea and when I travel abroad. And I really want to try baklava and kaymak in Turkey too! They were actually pretty popular in Korea for a while haha
17. I don’t know if you’re aware, but you actually have such a beautiful fanbase here in Turkey. Would you like to perform here one day? Because honestly, both I and my company would be beyond happy to make that happen and bring you together with your Turkish fans!
Seungyeon: Of course!! I really want to create an opportunity to meet my Turkish fans in person! I have a feeling that we might be able to see each other soon.
18. And lastly, what would you like to say to your Turkish fans?
Seungyeon: I really miss my Turkish fans, and I’m so thankful for all the support you always send me from afar. Even though we’re physically far apart, I believe our hearts are closer than anyone else’s. I’ll do my best so that I can come to Turkey soon! I truly hope we can meet when that time comes. Until the day we meet, please stay healthy and happy!
